Loofahs are widely assumed to be a sea creature. They are not. A loofah is the dried fruit of a plant in the cucumber family, grown on vines and dried until only the fibrous skeleton is left.

A coarse surface that does the work

The granular texture lifts dead skin in the shower or the bath, and the sponge-like structure holds plenty of lather.

It works in the kitchen too

Cut one up to scrub pots, pans and root vegetables, or use it whole on floor tiles and hard surfaces. The absorbency that makes it useful in the shower makes it useful for mopping up.

Keeping it going

Rinse after use, wring it out and hang it up to dry. When it needs a proper clean it can go through the washing machine on a cold wash.
