Compton Marbling Hexagonal Marbled Pen Pot, Orange, Red and Ochre

Marbled by hand in the same Wiltshire studio for fifty years

A hexagonal desk pot wrapped in paper marbled by hand at Compton Marbling. The studio was started in a garden shed in the early 1970s by Solveig Stone, moved to restored 19th century farm buildings on the Wiltshire and Dorset border in 1981, and is now run by her daughter Clementine alongside Alex Lewis.

Every sheet is made one at a time

Colours are floated on a bath stabilised with carragheen, an Irish seaweed, drawn into pattern, then lifted onto the paper a sheet at a time. The designs follow a set pattern, but because each sheet is marbled by hand no two come off the bath quite alike.

7 x 7 x 10cm, built for a working desk

Ten centimetres tall and seven across. Tall enough to hold pens and pencils steady, short enough that you can still see what is in it. The six flat sides sit square on a desk and let the pattern read from any angle rather than curving away.

Pens, pencils, brushes or scissors

It works as readily on a dressing table holding make up brushes, or on a work bench holding paint brushes, as it does beside a keyboard.
